RILEY ELF GALLERY

ELFs On The Road
The New Zealand Motor Vehicle Registration Department has advised me that as at 31 January  2001 there were: 303 Riley Elfs and 40 Wolseley Hornets on the road in New Zealand.

Thanks to the people who have taken the time to send in a picture of their Elf, good to see the time and effort spent on those restorations, and good luck to those about to start restoring an Elf.
This page has some New Zealand Elfs, just click on the links below to see a variety of Elfs from around the world . . .

NEW ZEALAND ELF GALLERY

This Elf was seen racing at Manfeild in the Mini Sevens class in February 2001.  Highly modified but an immaculate exterior made it a real stand-out among all the Minis.

Find out more about Mini racing from my links page.

More photos supplied by Bill in Australia, this time a collection from his trip to New Zealand

Christchurch - can anyone tell me more about this wonderful example?

Colin is a writer for New Zealand Classic Car magazine (see my links page to go to their site), contributing columns for the Everyday Classics section.  He has a collection of Wolseleys, and the latest addition to the fleet is a 1969 Hornet MkIII.  He has given it an engine/gearbox transplant, had it re-trimmed and now after 12 months work it is in everyday use.
Having never seen a running Hornet  it seems I'll have to go to Christchurch to check this one out!

    Arthur and  his Elf truck
For his next project, Arthur (Stratford) is working on a twin-rear axled, lengthened, Riley Elf truck currently under construction in his workshop . . .
Arthur built this fine Elf truck in the mid 1970's and uses it every day to get to work and for moving business equipment. It still has the original 998cc motor and has been 'a very reliable vehicle' says Arthur

Spotted this immaculate Elf at the Inglewood
"All British Day" in March 1999

    Looks familiar!

Now where have we seen this car before?  Yes it's the one owned by Alex, also seen in the carpark at the 1999 Inglewood "All British Day"

Shelley is currently driving this 1965 MkII, rust and all, but it just keep on going!

    ALEX'S ELF STORY
The car came into my grandmother’s hands in 1974.  She drove it up until around 1995, when it was parked in her shed with a deteriorating body and a engine dry of the essential fluids.
The car was panelbeated and de-rusted  then painted  in two pack Dulux 2K paint.  The original colour was Java Beige, my grandmother had it painted at some stage (She wanted it the same colour but it ended up a butter cream instead).
Paint: beige (pink cream) Colour (Dulux Spectrum White NH54) for the body, which is as big a risk that I was prepared to take with pink!  The roof is (I was aiming for Tartan Red) Dulux Spectrum Red NM 41.
When I got the car I discarded the engine and gear box assembly (excluding the rocker cover) and put in an Austin 1000 (I had the whole Mini for $100) with pot joint CVs and remote gear change, 1 only 1.5 inch SU, Cooper 3 into1 extractor, 1.5 inch side exit exhaust, 3 box 1.5 inch Repco muffler.  I later picked up a 1275 motor with a similar gear box.  Kept the Riley rocker cover.

Hydrolastic. Sold new by HH Mollers in New Plymouth, New Zealand.

The chrome was mostly in fair condition, the only parts I replaced there were the over riders.  The bumpers have got small dents and scratches but they don't bother me.
